Day 7: Mani Villages

Our full day began with a peaceful morning walk through back alleys and houses of Kardamyli up to the old town. Dafni guided us and identified the native herbs and plants. The smell of Lemon Verbena was heavenly! We ate fresh mulberries, picked right from the tree.

The old town is compact and interesting. Hearing there was a box of skulls somewhere, Ziana and others searched to find them. They did! We took a fun group picture. Opa!

We drove to Thalames Village to experience specially brewed coffee. The grounds stay in the bottom of the cup, do not stir! Otherwise, it is a thick, bitter mess. Steve had a sweet coffee, Rachel no sugar and Ziana and Leo skipped the coffee. Our accompanying treat was called sweet of the spoon with whipped yogurt (yum!). The coffee was a bit too strong on it’s own, but with the yogurt and spoonful of bergamot/tangerine preserves, it was a perfect match.

We drove through the Mani region where numerous tall towers rise up from the hills. Dafni continued with stories on the bus, while we gazed into the magnificent countryside.

Limeni Village Lunch,Monemvasia

Our lunch destination was Limeni Village. On the walk to the restaurant, there was a small alcove that peered into the sea. The view was so spectacular, we couldn’t stop staring and taking pictures. The varying dazzling blue shades, the boats, the hill of houses, rocks, trees, it was gorgeous!

Also spectacular…the restaurant! Oh my, the setting. And the food! We sat on a deck over the clear, turquoise water. Fresh fried calamari and whole red mullet, right off the fishing boat. Greek salad with homemade feta and the tastiest tomatoes. Zucchini, broccoli, potatoes and greens. Fresh bread, wine and excellent company! Sea turtles were just off the deck, by the fishing boat. Everyone was happy and energized. A brilliant group meal! To top it off was gelato across the street.

The gods were with us that day. The skies were sunny and clear until the moment we stepped foot on the bus. Clouds rolled in, rain started to drizzle, and the vibrant blues of the sea became dull and gloomy as we drove to Monemvasia.

We checked into the Panorama Hotel. Our balcony faced the great rock of Monemvasia, known as the Gibraltor of Greece. We joined other members for a nice dinner on the harbor at Matteo's.
